It is difficult to evade their spell.
It doesn’t help much either to know that the life of a sailor in those days was anything else than easy.
Many did not return- both ships and sailors.
And if a ship sailed to India, it took longer than 10 months for it to return.
It took several years.

On this poster ships are depicted which only sailed along the coast or on a short trip across the channel, along with those which sailed to India.
Some were made entirely of wood. Others were made of wood and steel.
After all, with the increase of trade, the trading routes became more and more dangerous and ships had to be able to defend themselves.

On the poster, you can see a ship from1775- a British Indies Ship which carried wines and passengers to India.
It had a capacity of 800 tons, had 3 masts, and was 43 metres long.
Another one is the Challenge from 1851 with 2006 tons.
She was the biggest ship of her time and travelled between New York and San Francisco in the process of which she rounded Cape Horn.

This poster shows ships with two masts, some with only one mast, and even one with four masts.
All the ships are drawn with the love of detail that we are accustomed to.
Masts and rigging are plain to see, also the cannon flaps both open and closed. You can see the ladders and the little windows in the Captain’s cabin.

At the bottom edge of the poster are a few essential items from life at sea:
an anchor, a barrel, a cable winch, and a sextant.
All of this is framed between two flags, whose meaning we have yet to fathom.
